Rosebery School shade structure installed by Versatile Structures

Rosebery School Architectural Entranceway

Project Summary

St Joseph’s School in Rosebery, New South Wales, presented an exciting architectural challenge: an eye-catching, structurally complex entranceway designed by renowned architects Neeson Murcutt Neille. The design demanded not only high attention to detail in the steelwork but also aesthetic integrity, making this an extraordinary project from both an artistic and engineering perspective.

Project Challenges

The entranceway’s unconventional height, shape, and footprint added significant complexity to the structural design. A key objective was to maintain minimalistic steel connections while ensuring structural safety and stability. After multiple consultations and in-depth analyses using AUTOCAD, our team, in collaboration with Pattons, engineered a solution that adhered to both the architectural vision and the stringent safety standards.

Another challenge emerged when Sydney faced one of its wettest December months, complicating transportation and site conditions. The saturated ground made crane operations challenging and caused equipment to get stuck during the installation process.

The Solution

Despite the logistical hurdles, Versatile Structures worked closely with Pattons to successfully complete the installation. The extensive analysis and multiple redesigns paid off, ensuring that the entrance structure not only met the aesthetic and structural demands but also exceeded expectations.

One of the standout features of the design was the precise alignment of the ridge line, which required continuous visual connection across all rafters. This delicate alignment was achieved using two cranes in a constrained work zone. Diablo connections were employed to minimise visual disruption, while a tension track system kept the fabric taut and perfectly aligned with the steel, giving the structure a sleek, hard-surface appearance that echoed the school’s adjacent architecture.

Nicknamed “Big Blue,” the entranceway stands as a striking example of meticulous planning, problem-solving, and collaboration, merging beauty with structural excellence.
