Coolum Beach Retail Complex PVC Shade Structures

Project Overview

Versatile Structures was engaged by the Coolum Beach Retail Complex to design, manufacture, and install two custom, architectural PVC shade structures. This project involved decommissioning and removing the site’s existing shade structures and installing modern, long-lasting canopies to enhance the aesthetic and functional value of the retail space at 1782-1784 David Low Way, Coolum Beach, QLD 4573, Australia.
Detail Specification
Client Coolum Beach Retail Complex
Location Coolum Beach, QLD, Australia
Structure Type Two (2) Custom PVC Shade Structures
Scope Decommissioning of existing structures, design, fabrication, and installation of new steel and PVC structures.
Materials Structural Steelwork with Dual-Stage Finish; Custom Fabricated PVC Membrane.

The Challenge: Replacement and Integration

The primary challenge was seamlessly integrating the new, custom-engineered structures with the existing retail infrastructure while managing the site logistics of decommissioning the old structures.
  • Integration: The new structural steelwork had to be fixed directly to existing columns and positioned below existing signage. The project proceeded under the assumption of the structural integrity of the existing infrastructure for the required fixings.
  • Site Management: The scope included site establishment, a site survey, and the professional decommissioning and disposal of the existing shade structures off-site.
  • Technical Constraints: No footings were allowed for in the design, requiring precise engineering for connection to the existing building columns. The structure excluded feature battens or infill façade sections shown in architectural plans.

The Versatile Structures Solution

Versatile Structures delivered a premium solution focused on durability, precision engineering, and quality control.

Design and Engineering

The process began with detailed analysis, including Shop Detailing and 3D modelling of the structure to ensure a perfect fit. The final design included full Engineering Certification (Form 15) for the new structure.

Premium Materials and Finish

The structural steelwork was fabricated based on the approved layout and received a high-grade, two-stage protective finish:
  1. Stage 1: Hot Dipped Galvanised The steel was acid washed and dipped in molten zinc.
  2. Stage 2: 3-Stage Powdercoat This final stage involved abrasive blasting to class 2.5, application of a zinc primer, and a final powder coat layer in a standard colour (TBC by client).
The membrane consisted of two custom-fabricated PVC canopies, made to industry standards.

Installation

Installation was executed with careful site management, including the use of lifting equipment (Crane Truck & Forklift) and adherence to strict quality standards. All connections were bolted, ensuring no on-site welding was required. The project provided Installation Certification (Form 12) upon completion.

The Outcome

The Coolum Beach Retail Complex received a professional and durable shade solution that provides superior weather protection and significantly updates the facility’s appearance. By managing the full process from decommissioning to final installation, Versatile Structures delivered a comprehensive, end-to-end project, demonstrating our commitment to professional delivery, excellent communication, and quality workmanship.
